7. DESIGN the new front door security system for the Worm hospital that has been shipped from Iceland.
8. SCIENCE: See how many marbles you can add to a plastic bowl before it sinks. Make sure you carry out a fair test!
9. I.C.T: Design a certificate for both Ben and Pearl for Curing Lake Monster Loneliness.

2. ART: Draw different types of footprints. A person, a cat, a dog, a bird- whatever you like- but be sure to include a sasquatch. Think about how the footprints compare in size and shape.
3. ART: Pretend you are a knight in shining armor and you are going to compete in a tournament. What will your flag look like? Create your own flag using an image of a wyvern. Remember it has two feet, instead of four! Add colour to your design.
4. WRITE: Imagine that you found a wyvern hatchling on your bed and you decided to keep it. You’ve been feeding it table scraps and hiding it in your wardrobe, but one day you come home and discover...
5. RESEARCH Yiddish. Write a list of words or phrases in both Yiddish and English. Practise saying them in front of your classmates!
6. RESEARCH: Medieval stories from the known world called Wales. What stories about Wyverns can you find out about. Write a summary of one of these and draw the wyvern. Be sure to read the Creature Connection feature pages about the Wyvern at the back of your book!
7. RESEARCH the Loch Ness Monster. Where does it live? What does it look like? Why do people say it exists? When was the last reported sighting?
8. CREATE your own creature calculator like the one Mr Tabby has. List down the features of three of your own creatures. Be sure to give the statistics for Species, Breed, and age.

CC 9 - Year 3 / 4 -Week 2 Term 3 - 31st July - 4th August: Chapters 5- 9
TASKS - Choose from any of the following:

1. ART: Draw the dragon hatchling.
2. DESIGN a kiwi flavoured jelly bean and list its features/special features.
3. RESEARCH: Investigate why the 4th July is an important date in America. What is its historical importance?
4. WRITE: your own recipe for artificial dragon’s milk. Then do the hands on activity in Task 7.
5. WRITE: Imagine you are a baby dragon , just emerging from the shell. What does it feel like to break through the shell? What does the world look like? What is the first thing you do?
6. HANDS ON: Make a model of Snooze’s home. Construct the things inside his cage.

Using the map of buttonville at the front of the book, give directions using clockwise and anti clockwise turns, ¼ turn, ¾ turn, etc and use a scale of 1cm = 100 metres or 1 cm= 1 km for these...Dollar store to the gas station, Buttonville Senior center to bowling alley, Grandpa’s house to Petal’s apartment, Grandpa’s house to the town hall…You could make up other directions as well.

The Practice - A New Home

TASKS - Choose from any of the following:

ART TASK:

2. Mr and Mrs Wormwood have written a postcard to Matilda and Miss Honey now that they are safely in another country. What do they say in the postcard?
3. Do you think Matilda was right to scare Miss Trunchbull at the end of the novel? Write reasons for and against scaring Miss Trunchbull.
4. Pretend that you have been selected to write a sequel to this story. Write a short summary of the sequel. Include information about the sequel’s plot, setting and main characters.
5. Matilda practises her special powers before 'the third miracule'. Write about what you have had to practice in order to get better at.

Make a list of ten such terms and then generate positive phrases in their place. For example ‘poisonous little pockmark’ could be transformed into ‘pretty little peach’. Children could use dictionaries and thesauruses to expand their vocabulary.
5. Nigel learns how to spell ‘difficulty’ using a mnemonic. A mnemonic is any technique that helps us remember information. Model and scaffold how to make a mnemonic to remember how to spell Miss Trunchbull. Make an acrostic of letters of her name to describe her. For example: Miss Trunchbull is Truly, Really, Unbelievably Not Capable, Having Bullied Us Little Losers! Make some for: Miss Trunchbull, Matilda, Miss Honey, Mr and Mrs Wormwood and others such as Lavender or Bruce Bogtrotter
